A brief letter from Arthur in reserve lines [he is called away at short notice] … “Yesterday was another great success. I don’t know what happened on our extreme left, but the Division on our immediate left apparently took Morval all right. We finished off Bouleaux Wood & this morning one of our patrols & a French patrol joined hands in COMBLES – so Combles has fallen at last”.

…Yesterday was another great success. I don’t know what happened on our extreme left, but the Division on our immediate left apparently took Morval all right. We finished off Bouleaux Wood & this morning one of our patrols & a French patrol joined hands in COMBLES – so Combles has fallen at last.
The weather is again extraordinarily fine and hot considering it’s the end of September. Yesterday was a happy day for two dear letters came from you – Wednesdays & Thursdays. Thanks a thousand times, darling. I love to hear from you.
You’ll know by now, of course dear, that the CO went sick and was rather bad & has been sent down to Corbie.
