Arthur makes life in a derelict unfurnished farmhouse sound almost civilised – changing for dinner: “This afternoon I went up to HQ on some business at 2 but was back shortly before 4. I had a few things to do – got into my slacks – dinner – et voilà”. He gives Dollie an evocative picture of his surroundings: “The weather here continues damp, misty & cold – rather typical in fact of Flanders at this time of the year – when there’s a mist upon the fields even at noon and the sight of a fire, where rubbish is being burnt, encourages one to walk the quicker to one’s own fire”.

… I was immeasurably cheered & encouraged by your letter of Sunday. God bless you my darling … Lets just look forward to the future, darling & pray that God in his goodness may grant us long life together. You are all my happiness dear.
So glad the Palace show was good dear. I’m very sorry to hear that both the Pater & Auguste are “under the weather”. I hope they’ll soon be on their feet again.

We are occupied generally in working parties day & night. This morning the Brigadier came round – he is very friendly. This afternoon I went up to HQ on some business at 2 but was back shortly before 4. I had a few things to do – got into my slacks – dinner – et voilà.
You see, darling of all darlings, there isn’t a heap of news. I am so happy & comforted & cheered in our love and your dear letters. Whenever I begin to feel dull I just have a look at your photo …Goodnight little one – happy dreams. Remember me to the dear Mater…
