27th August 1916

Poor Arthur is in a quandary – he hopes against hope that the news about sister Inez is not true. It would appear Dollie has written to him suggesting they scale down their wedding plans after hearing such tragic news, but he feels they should go ahead as planned: “… you will have a wedding dress, won’t you dear please – and a reception. If it is true about Inez, I think I can realise what she would feel in the matter – and I cannot see that we fail in respect to her by carrying out our original intentions. Isn’t it so, dearest?”

Arthur to Dollie

Sun. night. 9.20 pm

…Yesterday there was no dear letter from you, but a parcel came, & to-day your ever-welcome letter of Wednesday. I was hoping to get news from home as to whether it is true about Inez. I had a brief note from Joe – but he said nothing about it. So I scarcely know what to think. In any case darling, I am quite determined about the wedding… As it is, you will have a wedding dress, won’t you dear please – and a reception. If it is true about Inez, I think I can realise what she would feel in the matter – and I cannot see that we fail in respect to her by carrying out our original intentions. Isn’t it so, dearest.

I’m afraid I’m awfully lazy to-night, dear, only writing on one side of the page. To tell you the truth, dear, I am writing from my flea-bag. We were very hard at work yesterday. Up at a quarter to 6; & work from 7.15 till 2. To-day I was up at 6.30 & went to Confession, Mass & Communion at 7.15. Then I had breakfast & inspected billets. After lunch we all had to go to HQ at 2: and I’ve been at work ever since.

To-morrow we are on with the usual programme – up at 5.45 &c. The weather is very wet & stormy – the rain comes down in bucketfuls. Lloyd came over last night & slept here. He went back this afternoon. He is only 5 or 6 miles away. He is looking very fit…
