21st September 1916

This is just to be a short note, dear, to say that I’m very fit & well and that we’re out, at any rate for 2 or 3 days… I’m most awfully busy, for the CO is sick: and they’ve turned Edouard off on a job, and given the command of the Battalion to me. I don’t know how long it will last, but its some feather in my cap. I’m most awfully bucked. But there is a shoal of work, especially at this time”.

Arthur to Dollie

… This is just to be a short note, dear, to say that I’m very fit & well and that we’re out, at any rate for 2 or 3 days. If I possibly can, I’ll write again to-night. I’m most awfully busy, for the CO is sick: and they’ve turned Edouard off on a job, and given the command of the Battalion to me. I don’t know how long it will last, but its some feather in my cap. I’m most awfully bucked. But there is a shoal of work, especially at this time.

Your last letter to arrive was Saturdays’. I am so happy to hear from you, dear. God bless your sweet heart. We can only watch and pray, little one, & put all our trust in God. He is wonderful and Our Blessed Lady. They have watched over us wonderfully. Let us be happy to put all our trust in Them.

The weather is not very great – very wet & most awfully muddy. I am evacuating Bobby Page to-day… he was only in for 2 days of the 10 we were up. Yet to-day he said he couldn’t do any more …

… Cheero, my darling, my thoughts are always with you…
