30th November 1916
Arthur is writing earlier in the day because this evening he is off to La Gorgue to see the Bow Belles new show. No mail has arrived yet but they have a copy of a recent newspaper from home: “ We managed to get yesterday’s paper and I see that we’ve bagged another couple of Zepps & a ‘plane. Good work. I see that the ‘plane dropped bombs in daylight apparently towards the City & east end of London. What absolute cheek!”
Arthur to Dollie
Thurs 1.30pm
I am writing early to-day for I’m going round to HQ at 2.15 & expect to go in to La Gorgue to see the Bow Belles again. They say that they’ve some alterations in their show. If we go I shan’t be in until this evening, so I thought that I had best write now.
There is no mail in yet but I hope with luck to get a letter before I go. I do so want to hear from you. The weather is cold & misty again to-day. Thank heaven we are out of the line.
This morning there was a C of E Church parade. I went round to HQ. There were two or three things I wanted to ask them about. I met Maitland on his way to the Brigade but the Doctor came in with me & Rochford was there.
I saw Minshull later on at the Orderly Room. They are all very fit. McCartney – who used to be our doctor, dined with them last night. He was engaged to a girl who was a doctor in a Southampton hospital. When I came back, I think he was struck by my appearance of married bliss … So when he went home he married too.
Otherwise dear heart, there is not much news. To-day seems absurdly like Sunday, I don’t know why. There are the usual working parties day & night, that take a percentage of subalterns & most of the men.
We managed to get yesterday’s paper and I see that we’ve bagged another couple of Zepps & a ‘plane. Good work. I see that the ‘plane dropped bombs in daylight apparently towards the City & east end of London. What absolute cheek!
By the way, the new breeches from Werts aren’t at all bad. I’m rather pleased with them. Have you seen anything yet, dear, that you’d like especially for Xmas. I’m going to just hate it all being away from you.
